JAMAICA: GUN CONTROL TEST LAB, NOW MURDER CAPITAL
In 1974 Prime Minister Michael Manley told the people of Jamaica, "There is no
place in this society for the gun, now or ever." Following his lead, the Gun
Court Act and the Firearms Act were quickly passed, and the private ownership
of firearms and ammunition was essentially outlawed on the Caribbean island
nation. Fast forward to May 4, 2007. The World Bank issues a report saying that:
"Murder rates in the Caribbean --at 30 per 100,000 population annualy-- are
higher than for any other region of the world and assault rates, at least based on
assaults reported to the police, are also significantly above the world average."
Jamaica, the report said, is emerging as the murder capital of the Americas.
